How Can I Tell If My Baby Has RSV?

Keeping your infant healthy during the fall and winter seasons can seem like a daunting task. With all of the different illnesses circulating, it can be really hard! One illness that is especially concerning to new parents is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV.

RSV can affect anyone, but if your infant contracts it, it can be dangerous or even deadly. Our team at AFC Urgent Care Statesville helps you better understand the beginning symptoms of RSV and the warning signs of a severe infection below.

Where Does RSV Come From?

RSV is a virus that attacks the lungs and upper respiratory tract. When it settles into the soft tissues and lining of your breathing passages, you can start to feel sick and experience mild cold symptoms.

Most adults will experience only minor symptoms and will start to feel better within a few days to a week. However, infants are especially vulnerable to severe illness because of how small their bodies are. Tiny airways and breathing passages are more sensitive to inflammation and irritation and can create breathing troubles really quickly.

Those at Risk of Severe RSV

  • Premature infants
  • Children under 12 months of age
  • Anyone with neuromuscular disorders
  • Those with weakened immune systems

When Is RSV an Emergency Situation?

Whenever your child is sick, it can be scary or seem overwhelming. As parents, you know your little one better than anyone! While simple symptoms can be managed at home, any time your baby seems to be having trouble breathing, that is considered an emergency and appropriate action needs to be taken.

Trouble breathing can look like short and shallow breaths, bluish or gray skin, or chest retractions. Whenever you notice one or all of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Avoid a Future RSV Infection

  • Cover your cough or sneeze.
  • Avoid kissing your baby on the face if you feel unwell.
  • Wash your hands often.
  • Ask people to wash their hands before holding your baby.
